Shell Theatre

The Heart of Lafon.

The Shell Theater is the centerpiece of the Dr. Rodney R. Lafon Performing Arts Center — a world-class performance venue designed to elevate both professional productions and student artistry. With exceptional acoustics, advanced technology, and a stage built for possibility, this is where creativity comes alive for St. Charles Parish students and the community.

A Steinway Fit for the World Stage

One of the theater’s most remarkable assets is its Steinway Model D concert grand piano — a handcrafted, concert-quality instrument on par with those found in Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House, and the White House. This particular piano has toured internationally, carries artist signatures including Randy Newman and Tony Bennett, and is preserved in a dedicated, fully temperature-controlled environment to ensure world-class performance for years to come.

The Steinway reflects the center’s guiding philosophy: Students deserve the same professional equipment and artistic opportunities found in major venues around the world.

The theater also houses a full orchestral percussion section, including timpani, chimes, bass drums, vibraphone, xylophone, and more.

A Stage Shared by Students, Artists, and the Community

Every year, the Shell Theater hosts:

  • Touring performances and professional productions
  • Parish-wide and school-based concerts and showcases
  • Artsperience performances for more than 7,000 students annually
  • Community and statewide arts programming

It is both a performance home and a learning laboratory — the place where students develop their craft, build confidence, and discover what they’re capable of.
