PHOTOGRAPHY

FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY AND COOKBOOK PUBLISHING
During the 2020-21 pandemic quarantine lockdown everyone found their own passions, from exercise to home maintenance and remodeling to a variety of hobbies, arts, and crafts. One particularly popular undertaking is cooking with those who have learned out of necessity because of a lack of available restaurants to others just having a natural curiosity and general interest. Another growth art during this time is photography; as with culinary appliances and cookware, photography equipment flew off Amazon warehouse shelves! This course will put the two together, helping attendees combine their two passions to assemble their favorite recipes, photograph them for the most appealing presentation, and put it all between two covers—whether for submission to commercial presses or to self-publish. Instructor Gary Michael Smith has written and published a dozen of his own books and others for clients. He also has sold his commercial and fine art photography in galleries. Explore with him how to put these two skills together for an enjoyable and lucrative endeavor!

This class will have each student walk away understanding the basic settings to achieve proper exposure and sharper images. Each student will learn ISO, f-stop (aperture), and shutter speed, and how each one affects the exposure and quality of their image. The students will learn to shoot in manual, shutter, and aperture modes. Learning these settings and modes provides the ability to photograph with purpose and intent, gaining an understanding of the problems often encountered when shooting in auto mode. Students will also learn the parts of the camera, how the controls work (knowing your gear), and different lenses (prime, zoom, telephoto). This class will also discuss white balance and focusing techniques. Photography seems simplistically easy, but once we buy our first DSLR we discover that it is not. Handouts will be provided for you to take home. Bring your camera to class ready to shoot along with your lunch, snacks, and something to drink. This is a very educational photography class where the student receives one-on-one instruction. Do not miss out! Sign up early!
