Arts Education, Center Stage

Attending a live performance for the first time can be an exciting adventure for both kids and parents, but you might be wondering what to expect and how to prepare. Whether it’s a musical, a play, or a puppet show, we’re here to help make sure your little ones have a fantastic and memorable experience at the theater!  Here are our Top 10 Things to Know When Introducing Your Children to Live Performances.

Start by picking a performance that aligns with your child’s interests. Whether it’s a story they already adore or a performance style they’re curious about, finding a show that speaks to them will keep them engaged and excited.

Different shows are designed for different age groups, so make sure the performance is suitable for your child’s age and attention span. For younger kids, you might want to look for shows that are about 60-90 minutes long, perfect for keeping their focus while having fun!

Help build the excitement by talking with your child about what to expect. Explain that the lights will dim, the performers will come on stage, and how amazing it will be to be part of the audience. A little bit of anticipation can go a long way in making the experience even more enjoyable!

Live theater is a special experience, so remind your child about being respectful, like staying quiet, turning off phones, and clapping when it’s time. You can even make it fun by practicing at home! Pretend to be actors and practice “theater” behavior together. It’s a great way to set expectations and have a little fun!

Make sure your child is comfy! Choose clothes that let them move freely and are suited for the temperature of the theater. Want to add a special touch? Let your child pick out a special outfit for the occasion.  It makes the outing feel extra special!

Arriving early gives you plenty of time to get settled, explore the venue, and take in the excitement of the theater. It’s also a great chance for your child to get comfortable in their new surroundings before the performance begins.

Having a snack or drink can be comforting.  The Lafon Arts Center concession stand has plenty of tasty treats and drinks to enjoy before or during the show!

Live performances are all about engaging with the story. During intermission or after the show, ask your child questions like, “What did you love the most?” or “How did that character make you feel?” Sharing their thoughts helps them connect more deeply with the experience and sparks their imagination!

Sometimes, kids may get overwhelmed or need a little breather. If that happens, don’t worry! You can always step out for a few minutes to regroup. Plus, our lobby has TVs that stream the performance live, so you won’t miss a thing while you take a break.

After the performance, take a moment to talk about everything you saw. Discuss the story, the characters, and what they loved most. This reflection helps your child appreciate the arts more and creates a great opportunity to bond as a family.

Why not turn live performances into a regular family outing? It’s a wonderful way to create lasting memories, encourage creativity, and nurture a love for the arts that will grow with your child for years to come.

The Lafon Arts Center team is passionate about making the arts accessible and enjoyable for families. These simple tips will help ensure that your child’s first live performance is a magical one, filled with joy, inspiration, and creativity.
